Tom's Reviews As I listened to this I was struck by comparisons to another Canadian band, Kataklysm, particularly in some of the vocal performances. Add in that they are utilizing genres like thrash, progressive death metal, metal-core, groove metal and more, and you have the makings of a very enjoyable listening experience Favorite track: Emperor's Curse.

ZekeNigma Although the title is referring to a rather well known Roman historical event, it is also a perfect summary of the EP itself: FIRE.

Aquila continue to show all these new age metalcore bands how it's really done, throwing back to the good ol' days of Gothenburg melodeath influenced metalcore, while still managing to keep it fresh. With these four blazing tracks, they put the METAL back into metalcore, as it was always meant to be. Favorite track: The Plague of Galen.

This is my legacy This is a new beginning They shall remember my name I shall reign I shall reign Reduced to ashes My vision is set Rewrite our history The senate has betrayed me streets are covered in red Black smoke, total madness My supremacy reigns The gods are calling my name Ignite the match of shame My vision to rebuild the city in my image I must demolish the past The gods are calling my name Ignite the match of shame Fueled by high winds The fire in my eyes 2/3 of Rome gone Temples are engulfed Citizens become homeless Crying for justice Their lives reduced to ashes Burn! The fire in my eyes Burn! Those in my way Burn! Rome shall remain Destroy and recreate Look in my eyes Visions and fire Rome shall remain My throne My supremacy My legacy

I am Nero Obey my command Slaughter the Christians and behead them all I am Nero Obey my command Send them to the arena and feed them to the lions Feed them to the lions I shall destroy his sheep The Sheppard shall never rise again Kneel before your god Honour me Or you shall be executed Crucify them all in front of the masses Show the people who they are Fragile and pathetic honour to your god Behead them all The throne is mine So many secrets So many lies They shall all die with me No one can know No one can find out With this dagger my blood is on my hands I am Nero I have failed my god Greed and power corrupted my mind So many secrets So many lies They all shall die with me My blood is on my hands

A City Risen 04:15
They called me the antichrist Revelation was written about me I can not sleep at night My demons haunt my mind I have seen it all in my dreams It all begins with me And beyond my last dying breathe I see a city made out of stone Visions of solid structures That fires can not destroy . I've seen it all in my dreams Whispering voices they cloud my mind The visions and horror keep me awake When the sheep turn on their master A new king shall arise My own mother I could not even trust When the sheep turn on their master A new king shall arise

I am the plague Spreading fear throughout the land I am a prisoner of death Brought down from generations before me Silent and deadly I am the plague Isolation is your salvation I am an unseen beast Tearing away from your insides You won't know, you wont see it coming The senate crumbles Fear and confusion reigns I am the plague Pestilence is less deadly than the behavior of mankind Devastation All is not well All is dead inside We kill the weak and suffer - strong Together we strive Together we die

about

Emperor Nero and The Great Fire of Rome.
This is our most brutal and progressive release to date. We recorded, mixed and mastered these songs ourselves. This is the best material we have ever written together.

"We started writing for this Ep in 2020. The pandemic made it very difficult to get together. We also had to find a new guitarist. Once Tony joined the band he quickly learned the songs and started helping us record and mix ourselves. No pressure, just us in our element. I think the growth and maturity in our sound on this Ep is obvious. This Ep is us, brutal and in your face."
-Mark Arruda

8.5/10 review by Matt Coe from Deadrhetoric.com
deadrhetoric.com/reviews/aquila-the-great-fire-self-released/

“Aquila strikes that excellent balance between aggression, heaviness, and constructing memorable earworms that keeps up listener engagement. The Great Fire embodies an ideal melodeath metalcore product – ready to take the band up from the underground into making worldwide impressions with their music.” – Dead Rhetoric (2022)

“There are plenty of great guitar solos and fills on this album, with the ones in ‘Bound For Glory’ and ‘Within These Flames’ especially standing out…. Aquila’s “Imperium” brings the fury back to metalcore, creating an album full of aggressive vocals and face-melting riffs and solos. “Imperium” is a mostly great debut from a band that’s hopefully on its way to even greater heights.” – Metal Underground (2010)

“A notable difference between Aquila and other Southern Ontario bands is that they thrash throughout their songs, have great guitar leads and refrain from plastering breakdowns throughout their music. They keep it raw and interesting…. Everyone should pick up a copy of Imperium next time Aquila comes to your town. Fans of Assassinate The Following, Unearth, Bloodshoteye and Odium will headbang to Aquila. This band will be legend… Wait for it…. dary.” – V13 (2011)
